Questions and answers
AI-resistant assignments and SocratesIQ: common questions
How teachers can redesign assignments so AI cannot do the thinking for students, and how SocratesIQ helps.
About SocratesIQ
What is SocratesIQ?
SocratesIQ (socratesiq.com) is a web app that helps teachers redesign their existing assignments so AI cannot do the thinking for students. You paste or upload an assignment and get a 0-100 AI Resilience Score, a breakdown of exactly how a student could shortcut it with AI, and three ready-to-use redesigns (Quick Fix, Rebuild, and Reinvent), plus a lesson plan and student directions.
Who is SocratesIQ for?
Middle school, high school, and college teachers in any subject who want their assignments to keep working now that students have ChatGPT and other AI tools.
Who made SocratesIQ?
SocratesIQ was built by a working teacher, not a tech company. It is designed to strengthen the assignments teachers have refined for years, preserving their goals, voice, and judgment, rather than generate new ones from scratch.
Is SocratesIQ the same as SocratiQ?
No. SocratesIQ, at socratesiq.com, is an assignment redesign tool for teachers. SocratiQ is a separate, unrelated product.
Making assignments AI-resistant
How can teachers make assignments AI-resistant?
Strengthen three things: anchoring to your own classroom (evidence only your students have, such as a class discussion or local data), visible thinking (grade the process, drafts, and reflections, not just the final product), and student voice (their own analysis and judgment rather than a summary). These make assignments harder to hand off to AI and also raise rigor. SocratesIQ scores an assignment on these qualities and rewrites it to strengthen them.
Is there a tool that checks how easily AI could complete an assignment?
Yes. SocratesIQ gives any assignment a 0-100 AI Resilience Score, where higher means harder to complete with AI, and lists the specific ways a student could use AI to shortcut it, each with a severity and a fix.
How do I stop students from using ChatGPT to do their homework?
Bans are hard to enforce and AI detectors can be unreliable. A more durable approach is to redesign the assignment so that copying an AI answer does not satisfy it: require evidence from your classroom, make the thinking process visible and graded, and ask for the student's own judgment. SocratesIQ produces three redesigns of your assignment at increasing levels of change, from a light Quick Fix to a transformational Reinvent.
Is SocratesIQ an AI detector?
No. SocratesIQ never looks at student work. AI detectors try to catch AI-written work after it is submitted; SocratesIQ works before the assignment goes out, by redesigning it so AI cannot do the thinking for the student.
Do I have to ban AI to use SocratesIQ?
No. Before each analysis you choose the role AI should play: AI-Free Learning (human-only work), AI-Assisted Learning (students use AI for brainstorming and feedback while keeping ownership), or AI-Integrated Learning (students analyze, critique, and improve AI output). The redesigns follow the strategy you choose.
Does redesigning assignments actually reduce AI cheating?
In a published university pilot (Furze et al., 2024), redesigning assignments this way (with no bans and no detection software) brought AI-related misconduct cases down to zero.
How SocratesIQ works
How does the AI Resilience Score work?
SocratesIQ sends your assignment to its AI with a rubric informed by research on AI and assessment and asks one question: how hard would it be for a student to complete this with AI doing the work? The score is built from four dimensions (Anchor, Proprietary, Audit, and Agency), each scored and explained. Because it is an expert judgment rather than a fixed formula, the exact number can shift a few points between runs.
What do I get when I analyze an assignment?
A 0-100 AI Resilience Score, a breakdown of how AI could shortcut the assignment, three rewritten versions (Quick Fix, Rebuild, Reinvent) ready to hand out, and the assignment's Bloom's level. From there you can align it to your standards, generate a full lesson plan and student directions, and download everything as PDF, Word, or a Google Doc.
Does SocratesIQ use Bloom's Taxonomy?
Yes. Every analysis reads which Bloom's Revised Taxonomy level the assignment demands, and every redesign keeps that level or raises it, so making an assignment harder to complete with AI never makes the thinking easier. You can also set a target level.
Can SocratesIQ align assignments to state standards?
Yes. Upload your standards document (PDF, Word, or text) once, then run alignment on any redesign to see which standards it addresses, any gaps, and near-misses. It can then build a lesson plan on a CCSS-aligned template.
What kinds of assignments and files does it accept?
Any written assignment, prompt, or task in any subject. Paste the text, upload a PDF, Word (.docx), or plain-text file, pick a file from Google Drive, or start from a template.
Pricing
How much does SocratesIQ cost?
The first 2 assignment redesigns are free, with no credit card. After that, the individual teacher plan is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year for 15 assignment redesigns a month, and every revision, lesson plan, and download for those assignments is included. School and district plans are priced individually.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Sign up and get 2 free assignment redesigns, no credit card required.
Does SocratesIQ offer school or district pricing?
Yes. School and district plans are quoted for each school's size and needs, and discounts are available for Title I schools. Email hello@socratesiq.com.
Can I cancel any time?
Yes. Cancel from Settings, then Manage billing. You keep your redesigns through the end of the period you have already paid for.
Privacy and student data
Is SocratesIQ safe for student privacy? Is it FERPA compliant?
SocratesIQ is designed for teachers, not students, and collects no student names, student work, grades, or other personally identifiable student information. Teachers should not include student-identifying information in assignment text. District plan subscribers receive a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) that satisfies FERPA requirements.
Is my assignment used to train AI?
No. Assignment text is sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate the analysis and is not stored by Anthropic for training under SocratesIQ's API agreement. It is never sold or shared with third parties.
Can SocratesIQ see my Google Drive?
Only the files you pick. SocratesIQ requests Google's narrowest per-file permission: it can read files you choose in the Google file window and create new Google Docs when you export, but cannot see, list, or search the rest of your Drive.
Comparisons
How is SocratesIQ different from asking ChatGPT to rewrite an assignment?
A general chatbot rewrites whatever you ask. SocratesIQ is built for this one job: it scores the original against a research-informed rubric, shows exactly how AI could shortcut it, returns three redesigns at different levels of change that follow your chosen AI strategy and keep your topic and learning goal, checks the Bloom's level, and turns the result into a standards-aligned lesson plan and student handout.
How is SocratesIQ different from AI detection software?
Detection software tries to judge whether submitted work was written by AI, after the fact. SocratesIQ never sees student work. It strengthens the assignment itself before it is given, so there is less to detect.
